• Noon-8 pm. Hospice Festive Fair at the Hospice Conference Centre — huge selection of gifts and mouth watering foods.

• 6 pm. Tree of Lights Ceremony at Hospice House, with a programme of music and a dedication. The lighting of the tree is at 7 pm. This tree will stay lit until early January.


• 6 am-9.30 am. The Farmers’ Market every Saturday, selling fruit, veg, flowers, eggs and more. Inquiries: Mike at 082 886 0687.

• 6.30 am. Morning market at the Pietermaritzburg Wanderers Club. Inquiries: 083 321 4427.

• 7.30 am-12.30 pm. The Karkloof Farmers’ Market, a fresh produce market, is located 2,6km from Howick on the Karkloof Road. Inquiries to Andrea at 082 820 8986.

• 8.30 am-11.30 am. Breakfast at Lion’s River farmers’ market. Proceeds to Midlands Crisis and Trauma Centre Howick. Inquiries: Rex at 082 771 6653.

• 9 am-noon. Model trains run every week in HO Gauge. Come and watch or run your own at the old goods shed, Hilton Station. Inquiries: 033 344 1742 or 082 470 4898.

• 9 am-noon. The Pietermaritzburg SPCA will hold a bumper bazaar at the SPCA grounds, 235 Woodhouse Road. There will be additional stalls selling jewellery, Christmas gifts and other goodies. Phone 033 386 9267 for inquiries or to book a stall.

• 9 am-2 pm. Craft market opposite the city hall.

• 9.30 am. A bowls clinic at Allan Wilson Bowling Club is held for new bowlers. Bowls are provided and flat shoes must be worn. Coaching can be arranged at other times with Peter — phone 033 346 2553.

• 9.30 am-11 am. Howick Tai Chi classes at the Hadca Centre. First class free. Inquiries: 082 825 7412. All welcome.

• 10 am. Howick Birding Group hosts Mark Brown who will be ringing birds in the Nicols’ garden. Tea and coffee will be provided, please take your own eats. A collection will be taken to help Brown cover the costs of rings. Phone Pam at 033 330 2947 for directions.

• 10 am. Macs is hosting “Beowulf — the poem that inspired the movie”; a guided tour through the poem by Russell Comrie. Comrie studied in mediaeval literature at York University. • 10 am. The Umgeni Steam Railway preservation group will be running a vintage passenger train to Baynesfield. The train departs from Pietermaritzburg station at 10 am along the Richmond branch line to Baynesfield, where passengers will be conveyed by vintage vehicles to the Baynesfield estate open day. Tickets are R110 per person, senior citizens and children travel at R70. Entrance fee is included. • 5 pm. The Cathedral Chamber Choir is rehearsing for its Christmas programme each Wednesday evening in the Anglican Cathedral. All singers welcome.
