Dick Muir happy, despite injuries

LIVELY flank Keegan Daniels and journeyman hooker Skipper Badenhorst joined the Sharks’ injury list during the weekend pre-season friendly against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Sharks coach Dick Muir said yesterday the injuries are a setback.

Badenhorst is the obvious back-up to Bok hooker Bismarck du Plessis, while it is expected that Daniels will become more of a force this season with the introduction of the experimental laws that encourage a more fluent, faster game.

Muir told the Sharks website he was satisfied with the 24-24 draw against the Cheetahs, though there were problem areas.

“A draw was probably a fair reflection of the game,” he admitted, “and we achieved what we set out to from the game.

“But for us to play at altitude, give everyone a run and draw the game was a good outcome.”

The Sharks were the stronger finishers, outscoring their opponents 17-10 in the second half and this was also encouraging.

Muir said the Sharks were rusty in several areas and he is looking for an improvement against the Lions in their final warm-up game on Wednesday night before starting their Super 14 challenge against the Western Force on February 15 in Durban. “We could have been more physical in the contact areas … and we have to adapt better to the new laws and speed up the tempo of the game.”

He said he was encouraged by the form of the new players.
