Disabled are ‘tired of govt’s empty promises’

2009-05-28 00:00

PEOPLE living with disabilities took to the streets yesterday morning, demanding that they too be granted access to the things that are meant to be freely available to all.

The march began at the city hall and was attended by those with disabilities and able-bodied people alike.

Participants submitted a memorandum to the Premier’s Office, which highlighted the main concerns of the Umgungundlovu Municipality’s disabled population.

“We are tired of empty promises,” said Jetros Mhlongo from the Our Future Disabled Group, who orchestrated the march. “These concerns have been addressed before, but nothing has been done.”

Concerns addressed at the march included the exclusion of disabled people in the allocation of RDP housing, issues of accessibility to government buildings and hospitals, and issues of access to transportation and job creation.

On World Disability Day in December, protesters raised similar concerns with the mayor of the Umgungundlovu Municipality, Yusuf Bhamjee, who committed himself to resolving the issues raised.

“Nothing was done until today,” said Mhlongo. “This is why we are taking it to the premier.”
