Disgruntled Estcourt residents demand running water

2015-02-24 00:00

CLOSE to 100 disgruntled Estcourt residents were dispersed by police after they blockaded the R103 route yesterday.

The Ezizweni residents claim they have been without running water for about three months, and that their pleas are being ignored by the Umtshezi Municipality.

Resident Lindiwe Nene told The Witness they could no longer bear to watch other areas having water pumped to their homes, and decided to “burst the pipes supplying them water”.

“These two areas — Eziziweni ezintsha and Ezizweni ezindala — were having a water war because one of the areas had water running and the other had water shortages due to a broken water pump,” she said.

Umtshezi Mayor Derrick Dlamini was believed to have been summoned to address the crisis and, according to Nene, he was able to calm everyone down and promised to find a solution within four days.

Attempts to get comment from the Umtshezi Municipality yesterday were unsuccessful.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said police were monitoring the area in case violence broke out again. No arrests have been made so far.
