Disguised: Pair rob Virgina Airport, flee

2012-06-19 00:00

TWO armed robbers stole an undisclosed amount of money from Virgina Airport yesterday after passing themselves off as delivery workers.

Durban Air Show spokesperson Ray de Vries said the pair entered the building just before 10 am and went to the men’s toilet, where they remained for about five minutes.

From there they made their way to the Durban Wings Club office on the ground floor.

De Vries said: “It was at this point that they masqueraded as delivery personnel from suppliers, and made their way into the office and held a staff member at gunpoint. The accomplice made a ‘shhh’ with his index finger to his lips.

“They weren’t in there for longer than two minutes, and demanded the keys to the safe, which they then emptied. They left with an unknown amount of money.”

Police responded within seven minutes, by which time the suspects had fled in a car.

Traumatised staff members were allowed to go home.

De Vries said security had already been ramped up for the air show, scheduled for July 14.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident, saying no shots were fired and both suspects were still at large.
