District praised 2009 Kwanaloga’s

PIETERMARITZBURG was abuzz at the weekend with the hosting of the KwaZulu-Natal Local Government Association (Kwanaloga) games under the banner of the Umgungundlovu District Municipality.

The games which started on December 12 and concluded on Monday featured 12 sport codes including athletics, basketball, boxing, cricket, dance, football, golf, indigenous games, rugby, swimming, table tennis and volleyball.

The district municipality has been heaped with praises for its organisation of arguably the better organized games in the province since the inaugural games in 1998. The district was hosting the games for the second time, having last hosted the games in 2003.

Project manager for the games, Vusi Mazibuko, said that the district out-did themselves, adding that the other ten districts also added to the success of the games by preparing to compete well in advance.

He said that the games have proved once more to be a footprint of development in the province.

Umgungundlovu District amassed two gold medals, two silvers, two bronze and are placed fourth position out of 11 districts.

First placed eThekwini District got four gold medals, five silvers and three bronze. In second place Amajuba District got two golds, five silvers and three bronze; Uthungulu took home three golds and three silvers.

Ugu District in the South Coast bagged one gold, one silver and three bronze; Uthukela District snatched two golds and one bronze. Umkhanyakude walked away with a gold medal and a silver medal; Umzinyathi bagged a gold medal and two bronze.

Ilembe District salvaged one gold medal and one bronze. Sisonke District only managed one gold medal while Zululand, placed last, managed one silver medal and one bronze.
