District to bill some residents direct

2009-06-23 00:00

THE Umgungundlovu District Municipality last week approved water and sanitation tariffs, and from July 1 it will directly bill residents in six local municipalities in the district, excluding the Msunduzi Municipality.

This move will ensure that the district, whose core mandate is to provide water, sanitation and environmental health, has a revenue base. It has taken the municipality six years to start to deliver on its mandate, following the reported decline of the council under the leadership of beleaguered former mayor Bongi Sithole.

Local municipalities were supplied with water by uMngeni Water, but from next month, the district will be supplying water to Richmond, uMngeni, Impendle, Umshwati, Mkhambathini and Mooi Mpofana municipalities.

Municipal manager Sbu Khuzwayo said that the district received a R2 million payment for the first time from Rainbow Chickens in Mkhambathini for water. He said this is a significant milestone for the district, which indicates that the district’s turn-around strategy is serious and that the council means business.

He said the tariffs are in line with inflation at six percent.

Consumers will be able to pay their tariffs at the district’s customer care offices that will be operational as from July 1.

“The district is water- and performance-orientated and results-driven …” said Khuzwayo.

He said that the strategy seeks to ensure that the district receives clean audits, focuses on core business and makes its staff more professional.
