District to control water by July 1

The Umgungundlovu District Municipality has set itself a deadline of July this year to take full control of water supply in the six local municipalities under it.

In 2003, the country’s district municipalities were tasked with providing water and sanitation services to their local municipalities.

Of the 10 district municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal, Umgungundlovu is the only one that has not yet assumed control of supplying water.

The district’s executive committee took the decision on Friday.

District municipal manager Sibusiso Khuzwayo said the district will not take away the responsibility of water provision from Msunduzi Municipality.

Control of supplying water to residents will be tno longer be undertaken by the Mpofana (Mooi River), uMngeni (Howick), Impendle, Mkhambathini (Camperdown), uMshwathi (New Hanover) and Richmond local municipalities, said Khuzwayo.

He said the district is already responsible for paying for bulk water and maintenance.

The district needs to complete the transfer of about 30 000 consumers into its recently bought billing system before it can take control of the water function.

“We have seven officials made up of three engineers, three accountants and a supervisor from the Development Bank of South Africa assisting us with the transfer process at no cost to the district,” said Khuzwayo.

The residents in these six municipalities will pay their bills directly to the Umgungundlovu District.

“The date we have set for the transfer is July 1 and that date will not change,” said Khuzwayo.
