Diwali: Chetty disppointed in council

2011-10-19 00:00

DEMOCRATIC Alliance councillor and Exco member Mergan Chetty said yesterday he is disappointed and embarrassed that the municipality did not financially support the successful Msunduzi Diwali Festival held at the weekend.

Chetty, formerly an ANC member, said that in September last year Exco adopted a resolution to add the Msunduzi Diwali Festival onto its official calendar.

He said the event is for people who live all over the city.

“The municipality recently set aside a budget of R33 000 for the opening of a particular community hall, but could not provide R50 000 for one of the most important events in the calendar of the Hindu community.”

Chetty said the application for assistance was made three weeks ago.

Administrator Sibusiso Sithole told Exco last week that the municipality can only support this event in kind, but has no funds to offer because of the municipality’s ongoing dire financial state.

“We also need to develop a policy around such issues because there are other congregations that would come to the council asking for financial assistance which the municipality could not support,” said Sithole.

Chetty responded that the festival was recognised as an official event on the council’s calendar.
