Diwali: Ready for the festival

2008-10-24 00:00

Hindus throughout the world will be celebrating Diwali/Deepavali on Monday and Tuesday.

Durban will be a hive of activity with a massive Diwali celebration this weekend.

One of the major events is the FNB Durban Diwali Festival 2008 at the North Beach pavilion area.

A grand float procession will start the celebrations today with more than 50 colourful floats. The procession will start in Prince Edward Street and proceed to the beachfront.

Lotus FM Bhangra will entertain those who want to party.

For the more serious, a mass hawan ceremony at the festival site tomorrow will feature bhajans by several temple groups. A temple has also been erected on the festival site for the public who want to offer prayers. Another highlight will be performances by the Tansen Nepaul Showband and international artists brought to Durban by India’s consul-general.

A massive firework display will light up the night sky and Isidingo fans can meet actor Jack Devnarainat at the Sutra magazine stall.
