2012-08-29 00:00

WHILE people protested outside the magistrate’s court yesterday, a prominent Pietermaritzburg doctor made a brief appearance in connection with a charge of sexual assault.

One poster bore the message “No bail for sex doctor”. Others carried the name of the doctor.

His name may not be published until he has pleaded to the charge, because the allegations are of a sexual nature.

Reporters and the public were ordered to leave the courtroom before the 32-year-old doctor was brought into the dock.

The court’s ruling that the case be heard in camera followed an application by the doctor’s attorney, Sergie Brimiah.

He told magistrate Mishi Singh that the defence would address the court on “sensitive issues” relating to the case the case when applying for bail.

He said there would be no prejudice to the state if the matter was heard behind closed doors.

Prosecutor Zonke Maranjana told the court the state had no objection, and Singh ordered the court cleared.

The Witness later learned that the state did not oppose the granting of bail. The doctor was released on bail of R1 000.

He was ordered not not to communicate with the alleged victim, to hand over the woman’s medical file to the investigating officer and to surrender his passport.

It is understood that the 20-year-old victim was a patient.

According to the charge sheet, the sexual assault took place at Old Greytown Road on August 21.

The doctor is alleged to have rubbed the woman’s breast and put his hand down her pants.

A source at court told The Witness the doctor claimed he was the victim of a vendetta aimed at destroying his reputation and his family relationships.

He is married and has two young children.
