Dog 'auditions' to find the perfect Toto

2008-06-12 00:00

KICKSTART are holding “dog auditions” for their forthcoming production of The Wizard of Oz. They are looking for a dog who can make a perfect Toto for the show.

Toto plays a vital role in this classic, magical trip down the yellow brick road, and the chosen dog will be sharing the spotlight with Carol Trench — so will need star quality to match hers.

Greg King and Steven Stead will be holding an open “audition” on June 29 at 11 am at the Essenwood Craft Market park in Durban, and are inviting all owners of small, well-behaved dogs, to take them along.

The breed doesn’t matter, but the following details are crucial:

• The dog should be small enough to be picked up and held comfortably.

• It should be used to being handled, and be of a docile nature — for obvious reasons.

• It must be on a leash at the “audition”, and used to being on a leash, as it will have one on stage.

• It should be comfortable around large groups of people.

• Well-trained, obedient dogs are obviously preferred.

KickstArt promise to take very good care of their star. As remuneration they will provide the owner with petrol money for doing the ferrying to and from the performances over the three-week season, 10 tickets for the show and a month’s supply of dog food for the chosen pooch.

The dog will be required from August 10 to September 7. Rehearsals start on August 14, and the performances begin from August 17. Performances will be at 7 pm Wednesday to Saturday, 2.30 pm on Saturday and 2 pm on Sunday, from August 17 to September 7. There are also two special schools’ performances on August 26 at 11 am and September 2 at 1 pm.
