Dog found with baby’s torso

2011-12-02 00:00

THE mutilated body of a six-month-old infant was found in a dog’s mouth in Mehlomnyama on Tuesday morning.

Community members noticed the animal carrying something unusual in its mouth and when they looked closer realised it was the torso of a baby girl.

“They immediately reported the matter to police,” said Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“The infant’s head and arms are still missing.”

A 29-year-old woman was arrested later that day and charged with murder.

She appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

“She was remanded in custody and the investigations continue,” Wiid said.

Police are still investigating if the child had already been killed and dumped before the dog found her. Wiid confirmed that the animal was not harmed.

A post mortem was conducted on the infant’s body on Wednesday to determine a cause of death, but, said Wiid, “the exact cause of death could not be determined from the post mortem”.

Specimens from the infant’s body where taken and sent to the laboratory for forensic analysis.
