Dog hero returns home

2014-11-07 00:00

A COURAGEOUS dog who risked his life two weeks ago to save his family during a burglary is back home after being shot in his paw.

Now Jack, a three year old Bullterrier cross from Kwandeni in Hammersdale, is being hailed by his family as a hero after scaring off the burglars.

Owner Rebecca Nombela said the brave fluffy giant is the reason their family is alive. “Something horrible could have happened to us. I do not think we would have still been alive.”

Nombela said the incident took place at around 8 pm that night.

“Jack was just running around the yard and barking, then we heard a gunshot and my husband immediately ran out,” she said.

“He was lying outside our garage which is probably where the thieves were trying to get in and we saw that he had been shot,” she added.

They immediately went to the police station and then to the night vet, who prescribed medication and bandaged the foot.

“He did not cry, he was just still. He is very brave, he is our brave boy, our security, our baby. He truly is a part of this family,” she said.

Jack was treated at the Kloof and Highway SPCA Clinic where it was found that the gunshot shattered the main bone in the limb.

“The SPCA took him for one week and bandaged him up so his wounds could heal,” she said.

Jack returned home this week and is recovering well, according to his owner. “We are so lucky and appreciate everything he has done for us. He is a strong dog who loves meat and loves us. We are grateful,” she added.

Kloof and Highway SPCA manager Barbara Patrick said because of Jack’s tenacity he is recovering very well. “He will return for regular bandage changes and later a small surgical procedure to remove the bone fragments,” she added.
