Dog ‘must be put down’, says fireman

2010-02-10 00:00

A FIREMAN at the Ashburton fire station, Ronnie Drake, has called on the Msunduzi Municipality and the SPCA to track down the white pit-bull terrier that attacked jogger Janice Whitelaw and have it put down.

The dog’s owner has apparently given the dog away.

Drake, who has been at the station for 17 years, said the dog has attacked at least three people, one of them a fireman.

He said the owner’s claim that the dog is harmless is “utter rubbish”.

“I have seen that thing jump over the fence. It has attacked other dogs through the fence. He is a menace and needs to be hunted down for people’s safety.”

Drake said firefighters at the station are so scared of the dog that those on night shift won’t leave the station on a call until the fire truck’s engine is running so that they avoid waiting in the street.

Dog owner Keagan Petersen (20) appeared in court on Monday charged with keeping a ferocious dog.

Whitelaw said she and other neighbours have complained to the Petersen family and the municipality about the dog, Velo, and other dogs the Petersens have owned.

The SPCA’s Maureen Vida confirmed that Ashburton has a history of problems with dangerous and uncontrolled dogs, and that it is not the first time complaints have been made against the Petersens.

However, Msunduzi Municipality licensing department head, Mandla Sithole, denied ever receiving complaints from the community about any problem dogs, including those belonging to the Petersens.
