Doggle for a doggie to beat the sun

CAPE TOWN — Her eyes were red like strawberries from sun burn, but things are looking up for Piglet.

The light-sensitive mongrel is one of (at least) two dogs with goggles in Hout Bay.

Called “doggles”, the protective eye-wear shields the dogs’ eyes against the sun and the dog’s owner, Jenny Williams, had raised funds to buy the canny eyewear at R300.

“Sometimes when I walk with her, especially on the beach, some people will express their disapproval against animals that are dressed to look like toys,” said Williams, who gave the mongrel a home with her other dogs about three years ago.

“But when I explain that [the doggles] are for medical reasons and not cosmetic, people are fascinated.”

She said the other dog in Hout Bay rides on a motorbike, and wears goggles for the wind.
