Dolphins fizzle out in wet weather

2010-09-17 00:00

THE Dolphins and Cape Cobras only managed 21 overs Thursday as their four-day friendly fizzled out like a drop of rain on a lit matchstick.

The damp squib was welcome relief considering the relentless heat and dust on days one to three, but the SuperSport Series franchises showed impressive determination to soldier on despite the gloomy, drizzly conditions.

Umpires Brian Mantle and Babs Gcuma offered the players the option to come off but they did their best to make the most of one of the last days of match practice before the 2010/11 season begins.

Eventually, though, it got too uncomfortable and injury-threatening for batsmen, bowlers and fielders, so final stumps were drawn.

Bradley Moses of KZN Inland, in his Dolphins debut, continued his solid form of Wednesday afternoon to retire at 101 off 231 balls including 15 fours, while wicketkeeper Daryn Smit retired on 103 (161b, 14x4). Inland’s Gen Addicott got in 45 minutes following the withdrawal of Loots Bosman and David Miller treated onlookers to a half-hour of high-class batting.

The Cobras were hardly in when they were off again. Meanwhile, South Western Districts star Rudi Hillerman has returned home and intends making the Inland team.

Hillerman is with Zingari again and coach Harry Brown said their practices at Collegians Club every Friday at 4 pm will be enriched by the all-rounder’s presence.

The vastly experienced Brown, a first-class batsman and provincial coach, said the nucleus of Zingari’s first XI remains.

Gareth and Lyndon Brown, Tim Drummond, Jaques Pienaar and Rich Hlela will be joined by Hillerman, Rod Mitchell and exciting Maritzburg College prospect Nick Hendrie, coached for the last four years by Gareth Brown.

Zingari, the oldest Premier League club in KZN, if not South Africa, have their AGM at Collegians Club on Wednesday, September 29 at 6.30 pm for 7 pm.
