Dolphins’ hopes of top form fading

2011-10-18 00:00

AFTER a run of poor performances in the SuperSport Series, where the Dolphins have drawn one match and lost two, hopes of pushing for top honours in the tournament are fading.

What is more worrying is that the Dolphins are yet to face the tournament’s two biggest teams, the Cobras and Warriors.

Graham Ford’s side are headed for Cape Town this week hoping for a miracle against a team brimming with current and past Proteas. The Cobras started their SuperSport series with a win over the Warriors at the weekend.

The Dolphins have shown glimpses of brilliance, but consistency has been a problem.

Their batting performance in the first innings against the Knights offered a solid 338, but they capitulated 160 all out in the second innings.

The Dolphins’ bowlers hit their straps early in their first effort and managed to bowl the Knights out in one day for 203, yet their second bowling effort in no way looked to threaten the opposition.

With almost a third of their matches complete, form players look to be Divan van Wyk and Daryn Smit with the bat, and Kyle Abbott and Robbie Frylinck with the ball. Of the three new signings, only Frylinck has come good, while Vaughn van Jaarsveld has been in the wilderness for three months and Friedel de Wet has been largely off form.

Speaking to The Witness after the loss to the Knights, Ford said that at least one good thing is that he can take an extended squad to Newlands as there are no amateur games over that weekend.
