Dolphins pull off win

FORMER Dolphins skipper Imraan Khan scored his team’s first century of the season, hitting 101 and setting the platform for a second consecutive win in the Momentum One-Day Cup.

Taking on the Titans, the Dolphins won by four wickets, thanks to Khan’s ton at the top of the order and useful contributions from skipper Daryn Smit (34), Cody Chetty (40) and Robbie Frylinck (28).

On a humid, overcast afternoon, the Titans won the toss and decided to have first dig on a pitch which looked to offer plenty of runs to the strokeplayers. After the early loss of Heino Kuhn (4), Henry Davids and Mangeliso Mosehle combined for an entertaining second wicket partnership of 142, scoring at 6,98 to the over and setting the tone for what should have been a daunting total.

With Kyle Abbott offering another bowling option, replacing opening batsman Divan van Wyk in the line-up, Smit turned to his quick men to make the breakthrough; spinner Prenelan Sunbrayen and medium pacer Cameron Delport proved expensive in the seven overs shared between them.

It worked a treat as Lonwabo Tsotsobe picked up Davids for 63 and Craig Alexander accounted for Martin van Jaarsveld for a single. Abbott joined the party, getting rid of Farhaan Behardien (3), Albie Morkel (1) and David Wiese (0) first ball to suddenly have the Titans struggling on 174-6 and anything beyond 200 being a bonus.

All the while, Mosehle stood firm, going to his maiden one-day century and finishing on a magnificent 118 as all around him crumbled. He was given a life on 41 when dropped by Khan at backward square leg and he never looked back. Helped by 24 extras, the Titans finished on 250, Abbot (3-44) and Subrayen (3-52) the best of the Dolphins bowlers, the latter returing to claim some important wickets at the end of the innings.

Always ahead of the required rate, Khan and Delport (18) punished anything loose, the Dolphins racing to 50 in 7,5 overs and 61-1 in the mandatory powerplay. Smit joined Khan for a 67-run second wicket partnership and it appeared the Dolphins were cruising. After Smit went, Khan continued with Chetty, adding 80 and the game was all but won.

As the Dolphins had done to the Titans, the visitors clawed their way back, picking up David Miller stumped for a duck and Frylinck before the end, leaving Vaughn van Jaarsveld (15) and Abbott with a quick-fire 13 from five balls to cross the line. Abbot finished proceedings with a six over the deep square boundary and although there were eight balls remaining, it was a tight affair at the end. Best with the ball for the Titans was quickie Rowan Richards who finished with 4-48.

Khan was man of the match and for the Dolphins, a week that had started with a dismal defeat to the Lions, suddenly sees them sitting second on the log with 10 points, behind the Lions on 19 points.

Things are definitely looking up for the Dolphins and next Wednesday’s clash at Kingsmead against the Lions is a mouth-watering prospect which could decide the winners of the competition.
