Dolphins regulars set to lose their positions in the squad

THE Dolphins management are finalising next season’s contracts and new names will come in while some of the regulars are set to lose their positions in the squad.

Jay Naidoo, Dolphins selection convenor and manager of playing affairs at the KZN Cricket Union, told The Witness yesterday that the new contracts will be announced “early next week”.

“We have given several players a Thursday [tomorrow] deadline, so early next week we will release the new Dolphins squad for the 2008/09 season,” said Naidoo.

One confirmed new name is Eastern Cape Warriors batsman HD Ackerman, who is being brought in to “add experience to the Dolphins middle-order”, Naidoo said.

“We have a very young batting line-up that is lacking experience, particularly in the middle-order,” said Naidoo. “HD has bought a house in Durban and is making his home here.”

Naidoo said the 35-year-old Ackerman, who is also a Kolpak player for English county Leicestershire, has signed a “seven-month contract” with the Dolphins.

Although Naidoo would not be drawn on any other acquisitions, the rumour mill has it that 22-year-old Lions top-order batsman Blake Snijman has also signed, while a number of other young batsmen are mulling it over.

Ackerman and possibly Snijman will be following in the footsteps of recent Dolphins imports.

• Dolphins skipper Ahmed Amla will lead a 14-player SA Emerging squad to Australia in July.

The tour’s feature is a one-day series against equivalent teams from Australia, India and New Zealand. SA have won the series in the last two years.

Apart from the 28-year-old Amla, the other Dolphins cricketers in the squad are left-arm quick bowler Yusuf Abdullah (25), opening batsman Imraan Khan (23), leg-spinning wicketkeeper Daryn Smit (24) and — if the rumours are true — Snijman.

SA Emerging Squad (ages in brackets) — Dolphins: Ahmed Amla (28, capt), Yusuf Abdullah (25), Imraan Khan (23), Daryn Smit (24); Lions: Blake Snijman (22), Werner Coetzee (24), Vaughn van Jaarsveld (23); Cobras: Henry Davids (28), Rory Kleinveldt (24); Free State/Griquas Eagles: CJ de Villiers (21), Dean Elgar (20), Thandi Tshabalala (23), Eastern Province: Wayne Parnell (18), Warriors: Lonwabo Tsotsobe (23).
