Dolphins still seem unable to finish off

2012-01-14 00:00

THE Dolphins need close to 140 runs to avoid being asked to bat again by the Cape Cobras as the SuperSport Series match at the Maritzburg Oval heads into day three today.

After their overnight 311 for four, the Cobras yesterday added 121 before being all out for 432, to which the Dolphins replied with 146 for seven at the close, leaving the home franchise trailing by 286 runs with three first-innings wickets intact.

The Dolphins’ hopes of getting a couple of quick wickets with the new ball came true as Richard Levi was out to the last ball of the first over, sparring at Kyle Abbott to give keeper Darren Smit his 200th victim.

Next over, Justin Kemp played hard at a delivery outside off and edged big to backward point. Soon after, Dane Vilas padded up and Abbott won the umpire’s favour. Three wickets had fallen for 25, but Johann Louw found an able partner in Siya Simetu and the Dolphins’ inability to finish off was apparent once more.

The pair added 56 for the eighth before Louw departed for a characteristically belligerent 46. The Cobras’ tail still had some wag left in it and number 11 Charl Willoughby wielded the willow to such effect that his highest score of 47 in 252 first-class innings was in jeopardy before Simetu went for a well-played 41.

The wicket didn’t play that differently when the Dolphins came to the crease, but the Cobras proved you can make something happen out of nothing — not that the home side weren’t their own worst enemies at times.

Cody Chetty’s elegant shots brought him 35 runs and ensured he will resume the Dolphins’ uphill battle today. His sensible 49-run partnership with Robbie Frylinck ended when the latter fell lbw on what was the last ball of the day.

The Cobras were disappointed with their total after the hard work on day one, but may get to bat once more today.
