Dolphins still to assess Gayle's injury

CHRIS Gayle has joined the Dolphins, but the team still has to assess the extent of his groin injury before any decision can be made as to when the Jamaican will make his debut for the KwaZulu-Natal franchise.

Gayle is regarded as one of the world’s best limited-overs batsman, but his stay with the Dolphins, for their MiWay T20 Challenge campaign, looked to be in doubt when he suffered a groin injury the day before he was due to fly to South Africa.

Gayle slipped into Durban on Sunday evening, two days after his scheduled arrival, and underwent tests with the Dolphins’ medical staff yesterday, but team officials were not prepared to make any predictions as to when the 32-year-old would be available for selection.

“Once the medical examination is available to us we will be able to make an assessment of when Chris is available to play for us,” Dolphins chief executive Jesse Chellan said.

Chellan told The Witness that Gayle had yet to meet his new team-mates as the player had spent most of yesterday undergoing medical tests.

The Dolphins will hope that their big-money signing is ready for action sooner rather than later after they begun the T20 Challenge in unconvincing fashion with a narrow three-run win over the Impi on Sunday.

The Dolphins’ next match in the tournament is against the Knights in Bloemfontein tomorrow.
