Dolphins summon Addicott as Inland chase leather at Oval

2011-01-14 00:00

IT was a tough day at the office for KZN Inland as the Provincial Challenge three-day match got under way at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday. Boland’s Lenert van Wyk (21) batted superbly for his maiden first-class ton and an eventual 170 off 220 balls, including 19 fours and five top-notch sixes, as the visitors recovered from 14 for two and then 57 for three to post a commanding 364 for six declared in their first innings. At the close Inland were 15 for one, Tim Drummond beaten by former Dolphin Johann Louw.

“Tim will be devastated as he gives his heart and soul for the team but facing the new ball late in the day is tough,” said Inland coach Doug Watson, who added that a couple of his batters are due big scores and hopefully Friday will be their day.

It was an important toss and Watson said his side would also have batted. He said the fourth-wicket partnership of 104 between Van Wyk and Louw put Boland back into the game. Van Wyk also featured in a 131-run stand for the sixth wicket with Lee-Roy Walters and Watson praised the centurion for taking the attack to Inland. Paceman Brady Barends (3-76 in 22) was Inland’s most successful bowler. An unusual scenario unfolded just before play started. Glen Addicott was about to step on to the field when an SOS from Benoni requested the hard-hitting batsman to withdraw forthwith and catch a flight to the Highveld.

Dolphins batter Vaughn van Jaarsveld had pulled up lame during the warm-up at Willowmoore Park ahead of the match against Titans and was ruled out. Inland coach Doug Watson then made a call to 18-year-old Tyler Lortan, the talented top-order batsman and leg-spinner who is just six weeks out of Maritzburg College, and a lazy morning at home was transformed into a first-class debut. Such is the glorious uncertainty of life.

At Chatsworth Oval, Nashen Govender hit his maiden first-class hundred as KZN Coastal built a potentially match-winning platform against Griquas. Meanwhile, KZN’s premier club cricketers play on Sunday after the festive season break.
