Domestic’s revenge

2008-04-25 00:00

She was sacked for stealing an expensive bottle of perfume — and then plotted her revenge by having her armed robber boyfriend and his friends prey on the family who employed her.

On Thursday night, she spent the first of what could be many nights behind bars, locked up in the holding cells of Cato Manor Police Station along with her boyfriend.

According to Detective Inspector "GN" Ngcobo of the Durban Organised Crime Unit, her case is not the first of its kind he has handled.

Ngcobo said he was delighted at being able to lock up the woman — whom he described as "evil".

The robbery plan fell apart when members of the Durban Metro Police patrolling the Amanzimtoti area spotted a car that seemed suspicious. Several armed home robberies in the area had police on high alert, so they decided to pull it over for a closer look and took the suspect to the Cato Manor offices of the Durban Organised Crime Unit. There, detectives soon got to the bottom of what was going on.

The man confessed that he was planning to rob his girlfriend’s former employers and was in the area to spy on their movements.

Agreeing to help police in the hopes of a lighter sentence, he offered to lead police to the home of his girlfriend in kwaMashu.

Handcuffed and with his ankles in leg irons, he knocked on the door, but she got a nasty surprise when detectives stepped forward.

Ngcobo charged the woman with conspiracy to commit armed robbery — an offence that carries the same penalties as armed robbery.

Said Ngcobo: "I believe the magistrate will show no mercy in this case, people like her have no respect for human life … She had a good well paying job — something many less fortunate people would love to have."

Detective Inspector Keith Caswell, who recently sent an armed robber to jail for 75 years and who was part of the investigation into the woman, said: "It’s not the first time a domestic [worker] has arranged to have her employers robbed and it’s not the last. When you think about it, domestics are in the perfect position to orchestrate an armed robbery."
