Done roaming: Jet-setter pet meets his end after travelling 200 000 km

2013-01-17 00:00

CAPE TOWN — The world’s first four-legged jet-setter, Oscar Maximus (11), who has travelled more than 200 000 km all over the world, has been killed in California.

South African Joanne Lefson, Oscar’s owner, e-mailed sister paper Die Burger with the news yesterday. She said the dog was run over in San José.

Lefson adopted Oscar in 2004, just before he was due to be put down.

In 2009 he gained fame during an eight-month world-wide “World Woof Tour” with Lefson, to promote the adoption of dogs from shelters.

Lefson said she was busy planning a trip to Nepal in May — where Oscar was set to carry a prayer flag asking that every dog would find a loving home — to Mount Everest.

“The trip will go ahead,” she wrote, “Oscar was my life, my world, my best friend and true comrade. His death has left a huge hole in my life.”
