Don’t miss the biggest event of the KZN Winter Air Tour

AVIATION buffs who miss Durban’s Virginia Air Show need to be at Pietermaritzburg Airport on Saturday, when the biggest event of the KZN Winter Air Tour takes place.

KwaZulu-Natal Treasury infrastructure and economic services manager Clive Coetzee said the KZN Winter Air Tour is a chance for the province to showcase and brand regional airports in the province. Coetzee said while the provincial government did not have a “cast- in-stone” strategy for the regional airports (outside King Shaka), because each airport’s needs are different, the province did aim to provide technical advice and support to the municipalities that control the airports.

He said the KZN Winter Air Tour had grown nicely. When it started two years ago it covered six airports, while this year the show would be held at 10 airports, using the same budget.

The show had also, in the interim, attracted private sponsorships, he said.

The second air show for the year was held in Ladysmith last month. More than 5 000 visitors, some for the first time, had headed to Emnambithi Municipality’s airport.

“We are not creating anything new, or spending any more money. But we are showing that where there are airports there is economic activity and that these are places where work can take place,” said Coetzee.

The aviation line-up for the show includes SA Aerobatic champion Nigel Hopkins and a Yak formation led by Brendan Adams. The SA Airforce, a gyrocopter and a Mustang Sally are among the other flying events for the day.
