Dope test stunned Bok

BLOEMFONTEIN — Springbok rugby wing Bjorn Basson used the same supplements as his Griqua and Bok team-mates.

Speaking from Kimberley yesterday, a shocked Basson told Sport24 that he did not use any additional supplements.

He has no idea how he could have ingested the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine.

Basson and Bok hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle arrived home from Edinburgh yesterday after testing positive for the stimulant.

It is the same stimulant for which the promising Free State under-18 flyhalf, Johan Goosen, was recently suspended for three months after having inadvertently ingested it.

Basson and Ralepelle were tested after the Boks’ match against Ireland, their first on the British tour, and the results caused chaos in the Bok camp.

The management hurriedly sent various products to a laboratory for testing to prevent the crisis from spreading further.

The 23-year-old Basson said he was stunned at the results and uncertain of what will happen next.

“I didn’t expect this at all. I am not aware of how it could have got into my system.

“I can’t say much. I’m still in the dark. We don’t know what the next step will be. I’ll speak to Chiliboy to find out what’s going to happen.”

Basson says he used the same supplements as those used by his Griqua team- mates in the Currie Cup series and his Bok team-mates. He says he used only what his team-mates also used.

But Basson’s Bok tour was over even before the test results came out, as he injured his ankle against Wales on Saturday.

Basson, who recently signed a contract the Blue Bulls, says he could be out of action for two to four weeks.

The Bulls started preparing for next year’s Super15 series on Monday. Basson does not yet know when he will move to the Jacaranda City.
