Dorning’s funeral to be held on Friday

THE former chief of staff in the Office of the Premier, Warwick Dorning, will be laid to rest on Friday at St Luke’s Anglican Church in Howick, said close family friend Peter Miller.

The Witness reported Dorning’s murder on Monday. The 55-year-old was gunned down at his farm Adamshurst near Howick on Saturday evening.

Dorning was reportedly preparing a bedtime snack when he heard his wife sceam in the bedroom. He rushed into the room and and was shot in the head, dying instantly.

It was reported that two armed men entered the house through a bedroom door on the verandah, which had been opened for the family’s dog.

The robbers are believed to have escaped on foot after being disturbed by a ringing telephone.

Police said they escaped with the Dorning’s wallet, two cellphones, a DSTV decoder and a video player. A spent 9 mm cartridge was found at the scene.

Miller said senior parliamentarians and government officials have sent their condolences to the family.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize telephoned the family from Washington to offer his condolences, Miller said.

He said no special invitations were sent to individual parliamentarians. “This won’t be a state funeral. Whoever feels like paying their last respects is welcome” he added.

The family has apparently not had any reports from the police about progress in the investigation.

The funeral procession will start at 10.30 am.
