Double life for murderer

2012-09-11 00:00

A 22-YEAR-OLD man who participated in the murder of two state witnesses who had been due to give evidence against him in connection with an earlier murder was handed a double life sentence yesterday.

Mduduzi Mchunu pleaded guilty to the murders of Siyothula Ngubane and Khethukuthula Mkhize at GG Section, Sinathing on June 5, 2011, although according to his statement to the court, he did not physically take part in the killings.

He told the court he had waited outside the house where the murders were committed. He was wearing a balaclava and watched as his companions assaulted and shot the victims.

Acting high court Judge S. Mngomezulu told Mchunu that although he had pleaded guilty, the court doubted he was genuinely remorseful.

“The court observed during the plea process that you displayed an indifferent and ‘I don’t care’ attitude,” the judge told Mchunu.

He said it counted against Mchunu that the murders were committed on June 5, 2011, while Mchunu was facing a pending murder case dating back to 2009.

The victims were both state witnesses in the 2009 case, and one of them was the younger brother of the deceased in that case.

Mchunu was convicted of that murder in November 2011 and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment.

Acting Judge Mngomezulu said murder has become an “everyday reality” in South Africa and served as proof that humankind did not respect the right to life, which was recognised in the Constitution.

He said society expected those who did not respect the sanctity of human life to be harshly punished.
