Double life for murders

2013-06-26 00:00

DOUBLE life and 55 years in prison was the sentence handed down yesterday to the killers of two Pietermaritzburg metered taxi drivers who were shot in the head and robbed of their vehicles in 2010.

Samkelo Maphumulo (34) and Siyabonga Zimu (27) were found guilty of the murders and robberies of Sphamandla Zondi (22) and Xolani Hlela, and of the attempted murder and robbery of a third metered taxi driver, Zephrid Nxumalo.

The court found that although the accused had shot Nxumalo when he put up a fight, he didn’t die of his gunshot injuries, but died of unrelated causes in hospital after the incident.

Acting Judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati said she couldn’t find any compelling or substantial circumstances to justify imposing less than the prescribed minimum sentences in respect of all the crimes, which she described as “cold-blooded” and premeditated.
