A MAN wanted for two rapes that he committed the day after his release on parole after serving a sentence for housebreaking has been arrested.
The 26-year-old man was arrested in Imbali Unit BB on Friday in connection with attacks in France Phase 5, which began on March 6 with the rape of a 18-year-old mother in front of her mother and children.
Police said the teenager, her mother, two-year-old twins and her two-week-old baby were awoken by a man armed with a firearm.
The man allegedly ordered the 42-year-old mother to cover her face with a blanket, and then raped the teenager on the floor, watched by her two-year-old son. The man demanded cash, but when told the family had none, stole three cellphones.
On March 16, the man allegedly raped a 23-year-old woman in the same area.
The woman told the police that she, her sister and her sister’s three children aged between six and 11 were asleep in the house when she woke up to find a man, armed with a screwdriver talking to her sister’s 11-year-old daughter.
The man demanded cash and ransacked the house, taking R100 and two cellphones, before raping the woman. He told the 11-year-old not to watch and cover herself with a blanket.
During the ordeal, the sister woke up and found the man on top of the victim. She immediately ran out of the house to seek help and the man ran away.
Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the arrest came after outstanding work by the crime intelligence unit and other police officers. The man will appear in court tomorrow.
