Drakensberg: Fire breaks out in hotel pub

2013-08-02 00:00

A FIRE broke out in the pub at Monks Cowl Country Club in

Drakensberg last night.

No one was injured, and the only damage was to a small section of the roof.

Schalk Raats, an employee at the country club, said that the cause of the fire was still unknown.

“We suspect that it could have started by the chimney in the pub,” Raats said.

As he spoke, he could hardly be heard over the noise in the background of staff trying to fight the blaze and assist guests.

Another staff member confirmed that the fire started at about 7 pm.

The fire was the second incident at a Drakensberg lodge within a week.

Last Thursday, Lesotho’s only five-star lodge, the internationally renowned Maliba Lodge in the northern highlands, was destroyed in a fire.

No one was injured in the blaze that swept through the thatched main lodge, destroying the massive deck along with the bar, lounge, restaurant and curio shop.

There were no injuries in that blaze and guest accommodation was not affected.
