Dramatic car chase in Imbali

2008-10-29 00:00

ROADS in Edendale became the scene of a car chase drama reminiscent of an action movie as police were hot on the heels a stolen vehicle on Tuesday evening.

The drama started near Edendale Hospital after Constable Sandhe Thabethe of the Dog Unit spotted a car he suspected to have been stolen drive past him.

Although the silver VW Jetta had no number plates, Thabethe managed to circulate a description of the car through police radio, and he received confirmation that it had been stolen in Hilton. That was when the chase began.

“Upon noticing the police vehicle approaching, the occupants began firing at it, forcing Thabethe to return fire and resulting in a shootout between the police and the occupants,” said police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram.

Budhram said the vehicle, which had three occupants, had been driving towards Edendale. Suddenly, at high speed, it made a stunt-like U-turn and drove towards oncoming traffic. The suspects disappeared from Thabethe’s sight.

After Thabethe had called for back-up, the whole area, including Imbali, was patrolled. Thabethe spotted the Jetta in Imbali, and the chase continued until the stolen vehicle slammed into an electricity pole in Stage Two.

The suspects got out of the wrecked vehicle and fled. But Thabethe gave chase and arrested one of them. The suspect will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court shortly.

Police are still searching for the other two suspects.
