‘Drifting’ driver smashes into house

2008-05-18 00:00

A young Northdale family of four escaped serious injury when a car came crashing into their lounge minutes after they left the room to go to bed in their home at 48 Pluto Road.

The incident occurred after Kevin Moodley, his wife Yolette and their two small children, Tannese (7) and Talyn (5), watched Knight Rider on Saturday night.

Moodley wanted to watch another movie, but his wife persuaded him to go to bed as their children were falling asleep.

Moodley said: "I took my wife’s advice and had just carried the children to the bedroom when I heard a deafening sound. I ran into the lounge thinking the television set had exploded and to my shock saw a car in my lounge."

The loud bang brought out the neighbours, who alleged that the young driver was probably "drifting" (allowing his car to take a bend sideways) and could not control the car around the 90° bend.

One neighbour told The Witness: "I saw the driver get out and jump into another vehicle that was following the car.

"I don’t drive around Northdale on a Friday or Saturday night because of lunatic drivers who are on the roads," said the neighbour. "Now they even come into our homes."

Inspector Joey Jeevan confirmed the arrest of the driver and said he was hospitalised with chest injuries he sustained in the crash and was in a stable condition. She said a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened.
