‘Driver had clear view of Stander’

2014-07-17 00:00

A FORENSIC expert yesterday testified Olympic cyclist Burry Stander and the taxi driver accused of causing his death, would have had a clear view of each other before the fatal collision.

East Coast Radio Newswatch reported state witness Craig Proctor-Parker, who was tasked with reconstructing the accident scene, testified the taxi crossed a solid centre line at an “inopportune moment”.

The accident happened in Shelly Beach on the KZN South Coast on January 3 last year.

According to his testimony, data was retrieved from the GPS device on the bicycle which revealed that Stander was travelling at 44 kilometres an hour, 63 metres before reaching the intersection.

Parker has concluded that there was either no time for Stander to react – or if he did, he didn’t have enough time to avoid the collision.

The trial continues today. — WR.
