Driver has lucky escape after car ends up underneath a bus

A PIETERMARITZBURG man had a lucky escape after he crashed his car on Tuesday night, wedging it underneath a bus.

The accident happened at the corner of Victoria and Boshoff streets outside Metro Car Sales.

The full details of the driver, aged 28, had not yet been released yesterday. Those at the scene said it seemed like the bus was turning into the nearby service station and the car driver did not see it.

Iqbal Moosa, who arrived at the scene about three minutes after the accident happened, said he hoped the driver would survive. “The driver of the vehicle was still alive but seemed like he has severe head and chest injuries,” he said.

He said it seemed like the car was coming from the upper end of Boshoff Street past the Royal Showgrounds and going to town when it crashed into the bus.

“When I got there, the car was under the bus and someone had already [attended to] him. The thing is that the airbags did not open because he went under the bus, so the impact was not felt at the front of the car but came through the windscreen.

“It was not the bus’s fault because this guy went under the bus, even though the bus was parked there … I hope by the grace of god he survives,” continued Moosa.

He expressed concern about the bus though. “The scary part is that the bus does not have an under run bar fitted to the rear which is law on all heavy duty and high vehicles. It is used for preventing such horrific accidents.”

Moosa praised the response of the police and other emergency services, saying they were there within 10 minutes.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the driver was injured and was taken to hospital for medical attention. The cause of accident is unknown.

Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
