A DRIVER died when his car left the road early yesterday and plunged off a bridge into the river on the R56 just outside Umzimukhulu. KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services found the car half submerged in the river with the driver trapped in the car. Paramedics scrambled down the steep embankment, went into the river and rescued the critically injured man from the car. He later died on the scene, said Robert Mckenzie, spokesperson for EMS, who commended the paramedics involved for their heroic actions. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
