Driver smashes wall during chase

2008-05-06 00:00

A driver fleeing the Msunduzi traffic police demolished the wall of a property in Scottsville on Sunday night.

House owner Themba Soni described the accident: “I was watching TV when I heard this loud bang, like a thunderstorm”.

He ran out with his son and wife and saw that a car had smashed through the wall.

“The man in the car jumped out and ran away. First he went into the yard of my neighbour, but after my neighbour fired a warning shot to alert the police who were nearby, the man continued to flee and got away,” said Soni.

He said the traffic officials searched everywhere, but could not find the man, who had left his cellphone and wallet, a bottle of Black Label beer and a pair of sandals behind in the car.

A towing company was in a hurry to remove the vehicle, but Soni said he refused to let them until the police arrived to take a statement.

“They were in such a hurry to take the car,” said Soni, adding: “I suspected that there was something fishy going on with them because they didn’t want to wait for the police”.

This is the third time that Soni has experienced an accident of this nature. He told The Witness that once before, a car crashed through his wall and into his pool.

“That is the trouble with a corner house,” he said.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened against the driver.
