Drivers: Unions reject third offer

2012-10-05 00:00

TALKS to resolve the two-week-long truck drivers’ strike failed to deliver a settlement yesterday afternoon.

This after the drivers’ union rejected a CCMA-facilitated deal, which met their demand of 18% in the first two years, plus an additional third year included in the cycle, resulting in a three-year agreement.

Executive officer of the Road Freight Employers’ Association (RFEA), Magretia Brown-Engelbrecht, said it was the third time that the unions had rejected an offer “after they had indicated beforehand would be acceptable”. She said the RFEA could no longer “responsibly consider these types of demands and bad faith bargaining”.

Vincent Masoga for the SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union described the 18% offer by the RFEA as “propaganda”. He said they would go to court today to respond to the court interdict against use of violence during strikes. — WR.
