Drivers caught off guard in rain, hail

HEAVY weather, including hailstorms in several areas, wreaked havoc on roads in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.

On the Umbumbulu road three accidents were reported. Two people died when a bakkie they were travelling in rolled and came to rest on the side of the road against an electricity pole.

An ER24 ambulance travelling to the accident slipped off the road in thick hail and went down the embankment. An ER24 spokesperson said the two crew members were taken to hospital for a check-up.

Two people were slightly injured on the same road when a car collided with a truck.

At Adams Mission near Amanzimtoti a man died and 15 people were hurt in a head-on collision on the M37.

Two children aged two and four were critically injured. Netcare 911 called in a helicopter to airlift one of the childen to Nkosi Albert Luthuli hospital.

Two people escaped with their lives after their vehicle plunged off a bridge after skidding in a puddle and landed in the Amanzimtoti River.

Collin Govender of the Road Traffic Inspectorate said they were told of five accidents across KZN.

“People were simply caught off guard by the bad weather,” which also caused rush-hour congestion as drivers slowed down in the poor visibility or sought shelter from the hail.
