Drowning: Girl (3) falls into dip tank

2013-01-16 00:00

THE grieving mother of Okuhle Dlamini (3), the child who was found dead in a cattle dip tank on Monday, said she last saw her daughter on Saturday playing with other children in the neighbourhood.

Okuhle, who was reported missing on Saturday, was found dead in a cattle dip tank in Hammarsdale.

Her mother, Bongeka Dlamini, of Ixopo, was staying with her at a friend’s place in the Woody Glen area of Hammarsdale for a few months while looking for a job.

Dlamini told The Witness sadly: “She was a child who liked playing with others.”

She said she became very worried when Okuhle did not return home on Saturday.

“I reported to the police and we went to search for her on Sunday.”

Dlamini said that on Monday afternoon they found Okuhle in a cattle dip tank.

Provincial MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs Meshack Radebe said he would report the incident to the Premier and take responsibility for the funeral as Dlamini is unemployed.

“We are saddened by the death of this child.

“We are calling on the community not to speculate on what happened until the police investigation is complete.” said Radebe.

Radebe heard about the incident while he was in the area visiting child-headed households before the re-opening of schools.

When he heard about the incident, he visited the family immediately.

Ward 91 councillor Nkosiphendule Dlamini said he received information of a missing child on Saturday and was among the people who informed the community about it.

“We started searching and some members of the public, who were looking for their goats, discovered the body of the child in the cattle dip tank at about 4 pm [on Monday].

“We would like to thank the quick reaction from the MEC for Agriculture and the support they are planning to give to the family.”
