Drowning: divers recover body

A SOUTH Coast river has taken the life of yet another 13-year-old.

Sindi Myende drowned while attempting to ford the Umtwalume River, near Hibberdene, police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said yesterday.

Police divers arrived at the scene at 4 pm on Tuesday, the day of the drowning, and recovered her body almost three hours later.

At the weekend, 13-year-old Wandile Ncayiyana drowned in the Mzimkhulwana River, near Ezinqoleni, after going off course during a cross-country race. He apparently could not swim.

Also at Hibberdene, children at Ghobela School were lucky to be in class and not out on the grounds on Tuesday morning when a car careered through a boundary fence and came to a standstill beside a wall.

Police arrested the 41-year-old motorist, who was allegedly smelling of alcohol and had only a learner’s licence.

“Two of his female passengers were injured as well as the security guard who was on duty at the school gate,” said Wiid.

The driver was taken for blood tests before being released on R1 500 bail.

He will face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving.
