Drowning was ‘freak accident’ — Msunduzi

2008-12-22 00:00

Msunduzi Municipality believes that the drowning of Siyabulela Nkone at Alexandra Pool on Saturday was a “freak accident”, denying that the pool’s water was too murky for safety or that there are too few lifeguards.

However, the manager of sports and recreation in the parks department, Thomas Roux, said there was only one guard at the pool at the time of the drowning because the other had been sent to the Berg Street Pool, whose own guard fell ill on duty and had to be taken to a doctor.

He said the lifeguard left at Alexandra Pool was on hand and dived in to pull Siyabulela out.

Roux said they are waiting to see the police report and at this stage could not comment further.

Roux was asked about the murky water and readers’ suggestions that the municipality does not make adequate provision in its budget for the necessary chemicals and upkeep of its swimming pools.

He said Alexandra Pool has all the chemicals needed, but the water got murky after 700 swimmers had used the pool on Friday.

He said there was a previous problem with the filtration bag tearing, but they had sorted this out on the Thursday before.

“On Friday, the pool was packed with over 700 people, the water started changing colour, and we were in the process of getting it clear,” he said.
