Drownings: 3 found, 2 still missing

POLICE are still searching for two people believed to have drowned in the Nondweni River near Nqutu nearly a week ago.

One body was recovered yesterday afternoon and a further two were found in a separate operation near Hluhluwe.

Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) spokesperson Lennox Mabaso said: “The deceased found in Hluhluwe had been swept away by a local river over the weekend due to the heavy rains. Their next of kin will be informed.”

“By yesterday late afternoon we found one body in Nqutu.

“Our search in this area is ongoing,” said Mabaso.

He said the provincial and municipal disaster management teams in both Hluhluwe and Nqutu have been searching for bodies since the weekend.

The three Nqutu victims were swept away when the driver of the car they were travelling in attempted to cross a low-level bridge during heavy rainfall, which has persisted across the province this week.

Two men travelling in the same car managed to escape.
