2013-10-16 00:00

AN unemployed Amanzimtoti man believed to be the mastermind behind a drug lab, will probably have his property and assets attached as the Asset Forfeiture Unit is investigating how he could acquire so much wealth.

On Monday at 2.30 pm, members of KwaDukuza Cluster Task Team and the National Intervention Unit raided the premises of a suspected drug dealer in Amanzimtoti after securing a search warrant.

Inside the premises 840 mandrax tablets (street value R42 000) as well as R55 000 cash were seized, police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

A man and two women were arrested in the house.

A follow-up investigation was done when the owner of the property arrived, which then led police to Unit 3 in Chatsworth.

Here two bags containing approximately 1,5 kg of cocaine, cutting agents, packaging material used for drug distribution, an electric mixer, electronic scale, mixing utensils and R36 450 in cash were discovered in a white BMW X5.

The street value of the cocaine is estimated at R500 000.

The vehicle was seized, together with a Mercedes Benz and a VW Jetta motor vehicle. The alleged mastermind, as well as the owner of the BMW, were also placed under arrest.

The Asset Forfeiture Unit was also involved in the operation and they will be looking into seizing the property and assets of the accused.

All five of the accused will be charged with dealing in drugs and are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
