Drug bust: bail denied

2013-07-16 00:00

A MAN and a woman, believed to be his wife, were remanded in custody yesterday by the Durban Magistrate’s Court for alleged dealing in drugs.

Collins (37) and Veliswa Vwakaneme (31) were arrested by the Hawks’ narcotics unit on Saturday after a tip-off last week that led to the recovery of a substance suspected to be heroin — worth R2,5 million — and 1 800 Ecstasy tablets valued at R1,5 million.

It was reported in yesterday’s Witness that the two were believed to be renting the flat where the drugs were found. During the arrest, Collins Vwakaneme was found in possession of R50 000 in cash and drugs.

Information available at this stage, according to police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane, indicates that the two are from Amanzimtoti.

Zwane said the court denied the couple bail and remanded them until July 22 for a formal bail application.

“We believe that the suspects must have been supplying drugs to Chatsworth, Wentworth and the greater Durban area,” Zwane said yesterday.
