Drug bust: judge rejects new bail bid

2009-03-16 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG Judge Herbert Msimang yesterday upheld the refusal of bail to a Nigerian trapped in a midnight roadblock allegedly with R455 000 worth of cocaine hidden in a baby food box.

Nigerian Raimond Nwude (35) of Parktown, Johannesburg, was arrested with 1 245 kg cocaine in his car near an N3 highway entrance into Church Street in October last year.

Magistrate Raymond Kunene refused Nwude bail after the investigating officer said he feared that Nwude would not stand trial.

Kunene was told that Nwude operates four pirate taxis and is a partner in a boutique in Johannesburg. He has visited Nigeria 11 times since 2003.

He is married to a South African woman and they have a young daughter.

The trial is expected to take place in mid-2009.
