Drug smuggling suspects in court

2013-10-26 00:00

THREE people appeared at the Verulam Magistrates Court yesterday following the R6,5 million drug bust at King Shaka International Airport on Tuesday.

Lindy Walker (28), Abel Hermanus du Plessis (29) and Sibongile Mthembu (36) will be charged with dealing in drugs as well as charges under the Aviation Act and the Riotous Assembly Act, with regard to conspiring to commit a crime.

The three were not asked to plead and magistrate Michael Vehbi ordered that they be detained in custody until a formal bail application is heard on November 4. Prosecutor Navin Supersad said the state would oppose bail.

Walker and Du Plessis were arrested at the airport after they landed on an Emirates flight from India at 8 pm.

When police searched their bags it is alleged that they found 36 kg of crystal methamphetamine (known as tik in South Africa) with a street value of approximately R6,5 million.

Mthembu was later arrested in the Point area of Durban while allegedly waiting for the delivery of drugs from the couple.
