Drug trio cut deal with state

2011-12-07 00:00

THREE men who admitted they dealt in cocaine and ecstasy tablets nine years ago while working at a nightclub in Pietermaritzburg were given a five-year suspended sentence each in terms of a plea bargain agreement with the state.

This is on condition that they pay R34 000 into state coffers, which was estimated to be the value of the proceeds of each accused’s illegal activities.

The money is to be recovered from the accuseds’ bail, totalling R21 000, with the balance to be paid by each of the accused in instalments of R500 per month.

It was taken into account in the agreement, confirmed by magistrate Chris van Vuuren, that all three — Sean Little, Eric Swanepoel and Mark Jackson — would not commit any further offences after the incidents, which occurred between June 21, 2002, and May 29, 2003.

The court also had regard to the serious consequences of drug dealing for society.

At the time of the offences Little was the owner and manager of Liquid D nightclub in Pietermaritz Street and Swanepoel and Jackson were his assistants.

They admitted that at various times during the period they sold a total of 61,6 grams of cocaine and 10 ecstasy tablets.
