Drunk driver hits cop

2008-02-19 00:00

A TRAFFIC officer was knocked down by an alleged drunk driver on the N3 highway yesterday, when he was removing tyre debris from the N3 Cato Ridge northbound on-ramp.

Provincial inspectors Pranesh Panday and Linda Liphiyane parked their vehicle with the blue light on. According to Liphiyane, Panday was on the painted island when the vehicle knocked him down.

Transport Department spokeswoman Zihle Mngomezulu said the driver, aged 36, was unable to explain how he drove on to the island and knocked down the officer.

When he was given a breathalyser test, he was found to be five times over the limit. The driver was arrested and is expected to appear in court today on drunk and reckless driving charges. Panday is in a stable condition in hospital.
